Men's Soccer Falls 2-0 at George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. - George Washington netted a pair of second half goals on Saturday afternoon defeating the UMass men's soccer team 2-0 at the Mount Vernon Athletics Complex. The Colonials jumped on the scoreboard first in the 55th minute before adding an insurance goal in the 71st minute of play.
The Minutemen fall to 4-12-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the A-10, while George Washington improves to 9-7-0 overall and 5-2-0 in league action. The Colonials entered the match tied for second with Fordham in the Atlantic 10 standings, while UMass was tied for fifth with Rhode Island and Duquesne. Four more conference matches are schedule for tonight including URI and Duquesne which will affect UMass in the standings.
UMass will return home to Rudd Field next Saturday to host Fordham (Noon) in the regular-season finale and a chance to secure a spot in the eight-team Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament field. The Minutemen will also honor its senior class with a special pre-game ceremony prior to the starting lineups.
Garrett Heine put the Colonials on the board first at the 54:53 mark of the match. Heine was able to slip a shot past UMass keeper Jorge Becerra after taking a through ball along the goal line.
In the 71st minute, Oliver Curry added an insurance goal after collecting the rebound off a blocked shot from Heine. With the ball loose in traffic, Curry flicked the ball on target past Becerra who was screened on the strike.
Mark Morris had the best scoring opportunity for UMass in the 15th minute of the match with a bicycle kick that was cleared off the line by midfielder Oliver de Their.
In the 52nd minute, it looked as if UMass had scored the first goal of the match when Will Ellis' free kick found the back of the net, but the line judge deemed the Minutemen offside on the play negating the tally.
After the Colonials second goal of the match, UMass had three more scoring opportunities, but two were saved and the third went wide.
Becerra made three saves in net for the Minutemen as did George Washington keeper Jack Lopez.
The Colonials outshot UMass 10-to-8 for the match and held a 4-to-1 advantage in corner kicks.
