UMass Falls To Brown In Season Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The UMass tennis team traveled to Providence, Rhode Island on Friday, January 30 where the Brown Bears clinched a 7-0 sweep over the maroon and white. Brown remains undefeated against UMass in spring season openers for the third consecutive year, dating back to February 1, 2013 when the Minutewomen fell to a narrow 4-3 decision on the road.
The Bears picked up the doubles point early despite strong play from Carol Benito and Ana Yrazusta Acosta in the No. 1 spot. Benito and Acosta posted a 6-4 victory before the Bears claimed the remaining doubles matches. Dayna Lord and Ammu Mandalap bested UMass' Aarzoo Malik and Arielle Griffin 6-4 in No. 2 doubles, while Maddie Stearns and Hannah Camhi secured the doubles point with a 7-5 victory over Chanel Glasper and Anna Woosley the No. 3 spot.
Brown went on to sweep the Minutewomen in singles play, even in spite of strong efforts from UMass' top players. Acosta led off for the Minutewomen in No. 1 singles where Lord outdid the freshman 7-6, 6-0. Woosley also battled in the No. 3 slot against Camhi, but the veteran junior came out on top 6-3, 6-4. Benito looked to continue her winning into singles play in the No. 5 spot; however Brown's lone senior, Nikita Uberoi, managed to punch in a 6-2, 6-4 win.
The Minutewomen return to action on Friday, February 6 to take on Boston College for another road match. The following day, Saturday, February 7, UMass will host its first home match of the 2015 season against Quinnipiac at 12:30 p.m.
