January 31, 2015 | Women's Track & Field
BOSTON, Mass - The UMass women's track and field team faced off against a vast field of tough competitors including Boston University, Northeastern, and Dartmouth among other regionally ranked teams at the John Thomas Terrier Classic Friday, Jan. 30, in Boston, Mass., on the Campus of Boston University.
The Minutewomen are celebrating a broken program record in the 800 meter run after Heather MacLean's performance at the meet. MacLean took third overall setting the fastest time in UMass' program history of 2:07.36, breaking her own school record of 2:09.42, set during her freshman campaign in 2014. The run was an ECAC qualifying performance, a New England qualifying performance, and MacLean is currently ranked second in the Atlantic 10 for the 800m.
Also improving her mark in the UMass record book, Rachel Hilliard ran the 3,000m in 9:37.88, the second fastest time in program history, which qualified her for both the New England and ECAC Championships and ranks No. 1 in the Atlantic 10 this season.
In field events, Becky Stoyle 40 foot, 2-inch leap earned gold in the triple jump competition. Her mark was an ECAC qualifying distance. Margaret Riseborough took sixth place in shot put. Riseborough accomplished this feat with her 42 foot, 3.25-inch throw.
Carly Zinner posted a New England-qualifying time, 5:02.80, to take 28th in the mile run, while Alexandra Purdue-Smithe ran the 5,000m in 18:05.32 (37th), qualifying her for New Englands, as well.
Next up for the Minutewomen comes the Coaches Invitational. The competition takes place in Kingston, R.I., on Saturday, Feb. 7. Start time is slated for 11:00 AM.
