UMass Falls To Davidson, 71-63

AMHERST, Mass. - Davidson scored six-consecutive points to take a four-point lead with just over three minutes to play and keep Massachusetts at arms length for a 71-63 win at the Mullins Center Wednesday night.
UMass (9-8, 2-2 Atlantic 10) shot 41 percent but committed 16 turnovers that the Wildcats converted into 20 points.
Cady Lalanne led all players with 17 points and 13 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season. He also had three blocks. Derrick Gordon and Trey Davis added 10 apiece, while reserve sophomore Demetrius Dyson had his best performance at UMass, scoring 10 points in 15 minutes - both career-highs.
Davidson (12-3, 3-1) also put four players into double figures, led by Tyler Kalinoski and Brian Sullivan with 14 each. Sullivan made four 3-pointers, while Kalinoski handed out six assists and had five steals.
The Wildcats also shot 41 percent and were 7-of-29 from outside. They entered the game second in the country averaging just over 11 triples per contest.
After missing it's first shot of the game, UMass made 8-of-10 to grab a 17-12 lead. The Wildcats came right back with an 8-0 run to claim a 20-17 edge.
Jabarie Hinds made a free throw to cut it to two before Davidson extended the margin to 26-18 with 8:06 left in the period.
UMass went 9:53 between made field goals during that stretch, snapping an 0-for-12 slump with a 3-pointer by Dyson from the right wing with 3:50 on the clock.
Davidson got a basket with 1:52 remaining before Dyson buried another 3-ball, this time from the left wing and Davis converted all three free throws after being fouled with 2.1 left to cut the deficit to 30-28.
UMass turned up the defensive pressure at the start of the second half, forcing Davidson into three turnovers in the opening 3:40 as the Maroon and White went on a 12-4 run, capped by consecutive fast break layups by Gordon to claim a 40-36 lead.
UMass took a 59-57 lead with just over five minutes to play on a pair of Gordon free throws.
Davidson then gained control of the game, using a 3-pointer from Sullivan and a 3-point play by Kalinoski to go ahead 63-59 with 3:17 left.
Maxie Esho had a layup to trim the margin to two, but a Jordan Barham basket and two Jack Gibbs' free throws made it a two-possession game, 67-63.
UMass will conclude the 2-game homestand on Saturday when it plays host to rival Rhode Island at 2:30 p.m.
