January 10, 2015 | Hockey
AMHERST, Mass. - A pair of power-play goals and 29 stops by Matt Morris helped carry Maine to a 3-0 shutout of UMass hockey on Saturday night in the Mullins Center. The loss, which was the second of two non-conference meetings between the squads this weekend, leaves the Minutemen at 6-15-0 on the season, while the Black Bears improve to 7-14-1.
Just 35 ticks into the second period, following an evenly-played first, Maine ended the scoreless deadlock with Ben Hutton driving in a rebound in front from Devin Shore and Steven Swavely at the points for a power-play tally.
Swavely then increased the Black Bears' lead to 2-0 at the 7:18 mark. Shore picked up the puck off the wall in the UMass zone, curled behind the net and found Swavely streaking up the right wing for the one-timer.
Maine added its third and final tally with the man advantage 15:24 into the third. Cam Brown and Hutton set up a shot by Eric Schurhamer from the point for his second of the season.
Freshman Henry Dill, in his second straight start, made 34 saves for the Minutemen, who were out-shot 37-29 in the contest. UMass finished 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Black Bears were 2-for-6 on the night with the man advantage.
The Minutemen will be back in action next Friday, Jan. 16, closing out their four-game homestand against New Hampshire at 7 p.m. in the Mullins Center.
