#15 Massachusetts Hockey Completes Sweep Of Northern Michigan With 4-1 Win

October 05, 2025 | Hockey

AMHERST, Mass. – No. 15 Massachusetts used an early first period lead to help the squad skate to a 4-1 win over Northern Michigan at the Mullins Center on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, the Minutemen improve to 2-0-0 to start a season for the first time since the 2018-19 campaign.

"I expected a much more even game tonight, and that's what we got," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "But it's hard to get sweeps, doesn't matter who you're playing, and I give our guys credit. It's hard to keep that momentum going and to pull off a sweep. Northern Michigan played us tough this weekend, but I'm very proud of our guys. It's a great, great start to our season. Two convincing wins. Our room feels good, guys building some confidence. It's good to see some young guys score some goals. I'm glad to have some games, because it really helps us as a staff to figure out where we need to work to get better, and there's a lot of room for improvement, but really good first step."

UMass made quick work of the first power-play of the afternoon, 5:43 into the contest as sophomore Daniel Jencko sent a wrister inside the near post, set up by sophomore Francesco Dell'Elce and junior Jack Musa.

With the second period winding down, sophomore James Duerr found freshman Landon Nycz at the left point and Nycz flung a shot through traffic that found the back of the Northern Michigan net at 19:24 for his first collegiate goal.

After sending goaltender William Gramme to the bench for an extra attacker, the Wildcats cut their deficit in half at 2-1 with less than three minutes to play in the third. Tobias Pitka collected the puck from Grayden Slipec and sent it down to Caiden Gault who finished the play from along the goal line at the 17:19 mark.

The Minutemen quieted the rally, though, with a pair of empty net goals in the final minute of play with Musa netting the first from Galanek and freshman Lukas Klecka picking up the second as Matthew Wilde and James Duerr earned the assists.

UMass finished the contest with a 46-32 shot advantage and went 2-for-6 on the power play, while Northern Michigan was 0-for-2.

Michael Hrabal totaled 31 saves for the Minutemen and Gramme turned aside 42 for the Wildcats.

UMass will be back in action next Friday, Oct. 10, when the squad will travel to Warrior Ice Arena in Boston for a 7 p.m. matchup against Stonehill.
