Providence Tops UMass Women's Soccer In Overtime, 2-1

AMHERST, Mass. - Junior co-captain Jackie Bruno tied the score with one second remaining in regulation, but Providence responded in overtime, topping UMass women's soccer in the extra period, 2-1, in the squad's home opener on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field. Following the setback, the Minutewomen fall to 1-2-1, while the Friars improve to 1-1-2 on the season.
After some early pressure by UMass in the first half, Providence took a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute as Catherine Zimmerman drove the ball into the box, low from the left of the goal, setting up a one-timer by Alison Mills from close range.
The Minutewomen appeared to have tied the score at 1-1 with less than a minute to play in the period, but the goal tapped home by Stacie Murray on a cross from Laura Johns was called back for offsides.
Sophomore Megan Burke's attempt in the 71st minute was denied by Friars netminder Kristyn Shea to preserve the lead. However, with the clock winding down, junior Madison Smith carried the ball up the field and sent a service into the box for Bruno. Bruno corralled it, then turned and fired a strike into the top right corner of the goal with just one tick left, forcing overtime.
The Friars answered, though, claiming the victory in the 97th minute. Rachel Morrier drove a pass along the ground to Zimmerman from the wing that Zimmerman tucked inside the left post at the goalmouth for the game winner.
Shots in the match were even at 12 apiece, while UMass led in corner kicks, 6-3. Shea made five saves for Providence and redshirt sophomore Danielle Kriscenski totaled two stops for the Minutewomen on the afternoon. Fouls were 11-10, against the Friars.
UMass continues its three-game homestand with its next match set for Friday, Sept. 5, vs. Cornell at 4 p.m. on Rudd Field.
