UMass Alumni Maloney & Duncan Join Track & Field Staffs

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass cross country/track and field programs have added a pair of new staff members with alumni Jack Maloney '74 and Sean Duncan '11 returning to their alma mater for the 2014-15 campaign. Malone will serve as a an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for both men's and women's cross country and men's and women's track and field and Duncan has rejoined men's cross country/track and field as a director of operations.

Maloney brings over 30 years of experience in developing track athletes in New England, Eastern and NCAA competition levels as well as 23 years of business experience in finance, sales and marketing.

Prior to making his return to UMass, Maloney started his career as the head coach for the University of New Haven from 1976-1982 before becoming the assistant and eventual head coach at Southern Connecticut State University from 1982-1998.

While at SCSU, Maloney spearheaded the development of a program that produced 63 Division II NCAA qualifiers, 21 All-Americans, and 44 different school records. For his efforts at SCSU, Maloney was awarded New England Coach of the Year 13 times. Maloney achieved all this while maintaining a full time job as one of the most successful Credit Insurance Agents for CNA.

Following his time at New Haven and Southern Connecticut, Maloney brought his expertise to Fordham, from 2009-2012, where he helped add 13 school records, 11 Atlantic 10 Champions, three NCAA Regional qualifiers, and another IC4A Champion to his resume.

Most recently, Maloney spent the previous two seasons at Fairfield where he played a significant role in guiding the Stags to their first IC4A university title in 2012, as well as assisting with meet management and serving as the team's recruiting coordinator.

Maloney is a 1970 graduate of Notre Dame High School in West Haven, Conn. and a 1974 Cum Laude graduate of the University of Massachusetts. In his time as a Minuteman, he captained the 1974 track teams to a New England Championship while becoming a Yankee Conference Champion as well as setting the school record for the indoor 800m run.

Duncan holds certifications from the USTFCCCA in Program Management, International Protocol, and recently received his qualifications as an Endurance Specialist. He is a 2011 graduate from the Isenberg School of Management, receiving his B.S. in Sports Management from the Mark H. McCormack Department of Sports Management.

Since graduating UMass, Duncan has spent time as the Director of Youth Development at Personal Training International, Inc. in Acton, Mass. Under the guidance of former Ukrainian Olympic Coach and mentor Yury Klimovitsky, Duncan worked the developing clients in all capacities ranging from general fitness to athletes preparing for international competitions. In his short tenure, Duncan has had experience working with over 10 All-Americans, three National Champions, one World Junior Champion and one Olympian.

In his time as a Minuteman, Duncan was a part of the 2008 UMass cross country team that captured the Atlantic 10 Championship and was also an NCAA Regional Qualifier in the 3000m steeplechase. His mark of 8:52.85 in the event still ranks him third in the UMass record book. Duncan is a 2007 Graduate of Gardner High School. Both his grandfather and uncle are members of the MSTCA Coaches Hall of Fame.
