Successful Weekend Highlighted By Housatonic, Seven Sisters Events

The University of Massachusetts rowing program brought home a combined 16 medals from a weekend slate that included a pair of events in the Head of the Housatonic on Saturday, Oct. 11 and the Seven Sisters Sculling Regatta on Sunday, Oct. 12.

At the Head of the Housatonic, hosted in Derby, Connecticut, program leader Jim Dietz raced to a third place finish in the Veteran Men's 1x to start competition for UMass. Three Minutewomen followed with participation in the Open Women's 1x and Marika Kopp led the group with a fourth place finish in 18 minutes, 58 seconds.

The strongest finish for the team came in the Women's Open 2x. Krysten Menks and Emily Mann secured first with a time of 17:23 while Carly Zanatta and Allanah Rubi-Mooney added a silver medal finish of 18:18.

UMass earned one addition medal on the day when the Women's Open 4+ notched a second place time of 17:35. The boat consisted of Kelsey Anderson, Katherine Armstrong, Zoe Hill, Aiste Balciunaite and Nicole Destefano.

The Seven Sisters Sculling Regatta, which took place on the Connecticut River in Hadley, Massachusetts, netted the Minutewomen a dozen medals.

The Minutewomen took third in the morning 4x in a time of 19:53.7 before Rubi-Mooney and Dunlap secured bronze in the 2x in 19:38.2. Massachusetts then swept the podium for the early edition of the 1x. Zanatta took first in 20:07.0 ahead of Kopp (20:24.9) and Mann (20:30.9).

In the afternoon session, Mann, Zanatta, Kolovson and Menks secured first in the 4x with a 17:51.0 finish. Kopp, Balciunaite, Armstrong and Hill followed only seven seconds later to earn the silver.

The midday 2x race competitors found similar success. Rubi-Mooney and Marti Malvido earned the top spot in 19:33.7 while Dunlap and Grace Bundy crossed the finish line in 19:50.6 for second.

The 1x also swept the top three spots as the Minutewomen took first in 22:09.4 (Lauren Azuela), second with a time of 22:16.9 (Dunlap) and third in 22:34.4 (Courtney Edson).
