Varsity 4+ Boat Earns Gold in 2015 Spring Opener

KINGSTON, R.I. - The UMass rowing team battled cold temperatures and snowy conditions to pick up a first place finish in their Varsity 4+ race during the opening weekend of the 2015 season on Lake Walmsley in Kingston, Rhode Island, Saturday. With the first 500 meters of the Rams course frozen, Massachusetts and Rhode Island opted to do four pieces instead of the complete 2000 meter race Saturday.
In the Varsity 4+ race, the boat ofAbigail Raichek, Krysten Menks, Sam Kolovson, Carly Zanatta and Sam Wonderlin were able to hold off the Rams' boat to capture first while UMass' Varsity 4+ B boat also took third in the same event. The third place boat was comprised of Kelsey Anderson, Maggie Curran, Mia Bornstein, Charlotte Bleiler and Leanne Ondreicka.
In the Minutewomen's other events Saturday, UMass took second in the Varsity 8+ and 2nd Varsity 8+ races while the Novice 8+ boat took one of the four pieces against the Rams.
With Massachusetts' home course along the Connecticut River officially opening Saturday, clear from the ice that forced UMass to relocate its race against URI this weekend, the upcoming week will be the first time the team as a whole will be on the water this season. The Minutewomen return to the water next Saturday, April 4, when they travel to Boston, Massachusetts, to compete against Boston College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on the Charles River course.
