Strong Start Leads #17 Women's Lax Past Sacred Heart 21-8

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The No. 17 UMass women's lacrosse team held Sacred Heart scoreless for the first 20 minutes of play en route to a 21-8 win on Saturday afternoon at Campus Field. The Minutewomen jumped out to a 9-0 lead and kept the Pioneers from scoring until the 9:34 mark of the first half. Cori Murray led UMass with four goals as 15 Minutewomen scored in the game.
UMass improves to 7-2 overall, while Sacred Heart falls to 0-5. The Minutewomen will head to Holy Cross on Wednesday afternoon at 4 PM.
Along with Murray's four goals, UMass was led by Katie Ferris who had two goals and an assist, Lauren Terracciano who scored a pair of goals and Eileen McDonald who also notched two goals. Tanner Guarino and Maddie Ward each had a goal and two assists in the game.
Emily Pepe led Sacred Heart with four goals and an assist, while four other players added a goal. Kelly Keenan took the loss in goal making seven saves while allowing all 21 goals.
UMass led 12-3 at halftime after the nine-goal run to start the game. Sarah Mullen's first career goal in the second half sparked a five-goal run which gave the Minutewomen their largest lead of the game, 20-5. McDonald scored both her goals in that stretch, while Mary Pat Theofield capped the run with a goal at the 6:51 mark.
The Pioneers scored three straight goals down the stretch before Ward's goal with 25 seconds to go gave the final 21-8 score for UMass.
The Minutewomen held a 31-to-19 advantage in shots and forced the Pioneers into 19 turnovers while posting just 11 miscues in the game.
