Old Dominion Takes Game One From UMass, 6-1

NORFOLK, Va. - The UMass baseball team dropped the first game of its Spring Break trip on Saturday afternoon, falling 6-1 at Old Dominion at Bud Metheny Complex. Following the setback, the Minutemen are 1-4 on the season, while the Monarchs improve to 7-10.
Old Dominion scored the first run of the afternoon in the bottom of the second. Josh Tutwiler drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a ground ball before scoring on an error.
After playing the next two innings scoreless, UMass managed to tie the score at 1-1 in the top of the fifth. Walks to Rich Graef, Anthony Serino, Dylan Begin and Tom Conley forced in a run.
However, in the bottom half of the frame, the Monarchs pulled back in front, scoring three runs on two hits. Tutwiler was hit by a pitch to force in the go-ahead run. Then the next batter, Joey Burney, dropped a single into center that plated Kenneth Belgrave and Chris Baker.
Tutwiler added two more insurance runs for Old Dominion in the seventh with an RBI double to right.
Starter Glen Misho took the loss for the Minutemen (0-2) after letting up six runs, five earned, on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Freshman Tim Stoops made his collegiate debut and fanned three in 1.2 hitless innings of work. Monarch's reliever Erick Baker picked up the victory (2-1) after tossing 2.1 hitless, walking three and striking out four.
Redshirt Freshman Adam Picard had two of UMass' five hits on the afternoon, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double to extend his hitting streak to five straight games. Burney was 2-for-4 with two RBI for Old Dominion, while Tutwiler drove in three.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow, March 18, at the Bud Metheny Complex at 2 p.m.
