UMass honored former La Salle coach Charles Torpey this Saturday in North Kingston, R.I. and continued to have success, bringing home five New England qualifiers and five freshmen who competed well in their respective events.
Three of UMass' NEC qualifiers were freshman last night. Katie Powers, Rebecca Stoyle and Jaclyn Lam all repeated their performances from last week. Powers (Holbrook, Mass.) placed sixth in the meet with a time of 3:02.54, qualifying for the NEC. Rebecca Stoyle (Pembroke, Mass.) claimed first overall in the triple jump while qualifying for New Englands with a distance of 37-04.50. Jaclyn Lam (Stockton, Cal.) finished second to Stoyle in the triple jump with a distance of 37-03.00. Lam also qualified for the New England Championships. The freshman also leaped for a mark of 5-3.00 in the high jump, the mark was good enough for third in the event.
Freshman, Ashley Palmer (Phoenix, N.Y.) shined in the long jump, flying for a distance of 17-04.25. The mark placed her third overall. The final freshman to compete well was Meghan Landry (Marshfield, Mass.) who was a part of the 4x400 meter relay squad. Assisting Landry in the event were Sarah Bitterman (Marblehead, Mass.), Meghan Leahy (Sterling, Mass.), and Michelle Jenssen (Mansfield, Mass.). The team finished in 4:01.46, good enough for fourth in the event.
Anchoring the Minutewomen were juniors Rachelle Bourque (Rowley, Mass.) and Nalis Mbianda (Newton, Mass.). Rachelle Bourque threw for a distance of 42-01.25, qualifying for the NEC and placing sixth in the meet. Mbianda was right behind Bourque with a mark of 42-00.00, placing seventh overall. The pair of junior throwers have been solid for UMass all season long, qualifying for the New England Championships three weeks straight. Nalis Mbianda was an ECAC qualifier last week.
Other notables were junior Rebecca Banker (Salem, Conn.) and senior Chrissy Silvar (Fitchburg, Mass.). Banker leaped for a fifth place mark of 5-01.00 in the high jump. Silvar set a mark of 10-10.00 in the pole vault, finishing fourth in the event.
