AMHERST, Mass. - UMass freshman goaltender Steve Mastalerz was tabbed the Hockey East Co-Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. Mastalerz, who shares the honor with Merrimack's Joe Cannata, is the third member of the Mass Attack to be honored with a Hockey East accolade this season as Conor Allen and Kevin Boyle previously claimed weekly awards.

This past Friday night in the Mullins Center, Mastalerz made a season-best 35 saves and picked up his first career shutout as he backstopped UMass to a 4-0 victory over #4 Boston College. The win, which improved the squad to 6-0-3 at home this season, was the second straight for the Minutemen over the Eagles and the first ever via shutout.

Mastalerz also logged an assist on the game-winning goal, becoming the first UMass goaltender to notch an assist since Jon Quick vs. Northeastern on Nov. 18, 2006.

Now 2-1-0 on the season, Mastalerz holds a 2.66 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage with 116 stops in 248:15 in the net.

The Mass Attack will be back in action this Friday at home vs. Vermont, on Jan. 20 at 7 p.m.
