CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - After taking a 17-point lead to start the game, Boston College handed the No. 17 UMass football team its first loss of the season, 45-17, on Saturday at Alumni Stadium. Jesse Julmiste set a new UMass record with 252 kick-off return yards, while Jonathan Hernandez rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown.

The Minutemen fall to 2-1 overall, while Boston College picked up its first win of the season moving to 1-3 overall.

In addition to his 80 yards rushing, Hernandez also had five catches for 38 yards. Pagel finished the game with 195 yards throwing on 18-of-37 attempts with two interceptions.

Chase Rettig led Boston College going 14-of-22 for 196 yards for a career-high three touchdown passes. Andrew Williams led the ground game with 95 yards on 20 carries. Colin Larmond, Jr. led the receiving corps with six catches for 114 yards and two scores.

The Eagles opened the game with an interception of Pagel on the first play from scrimmage for the Minutemen. An 11-play, 47 yard drive culminated in a one-yard touchdown reception by Lars Anderson for the 7-0 lead with 9:10 left in the first quarter.

Nate Freese added a field goal in the first quarter and Tahj Kimble scored on a three-yard rush at the 9:31 mark of the second quarter to give the Eagles the early 17-0 lead.

Julmiste cut into that with his 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to pull the Minutemen within 10, but Boston College scored on the ensuing possession to go back up 17, 24-7.

In the third quarter, UMass converted a 34-yard field goal by Brendon Levengood to make the score 24-10 with 4:33 left, but Boston College scored a pair touchdowns in the final 96 seconds of the quarter to go up 38-10.

The Minutemen mounted a drive down to the one-yard line looking to cut the lead, but with 12:28 to go in the fourth quarter, Boston College's Kevin Pierre-Louis recovered a UMass fumble in mid-air returning it 96-yards to push the lead to 45-10.

Two minutes later, Hernandez plunged in from six yards out to give UMass the final score.

UMass travels to Norfolk, Va. next week to face Old Dominion in a 7 p.m. on Saturday.
