Morrissey's Pair Helps UMass Past Elon, 2-1

AMHERST, Mass. - Led by senior Julie Morrissey's pair of goals, the UMass women's soccer team improved upon its undefeated record with a 2-1 win over Elon at Rudd field on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Minutewomen move to 2-0-1, while the Phoenix drops to 1-2-1 to start the year.
After a flurry of scoring chances 20 minutes in, Morrissey connected with a perfectly-placed cross by senior Deanna Colarossi. Morrissey put the ball in along the ground behind goalkeeper Shannon Cosgrove to give UMass a 1-0 lead at 22:50.
Then in the 55th minute, despite being out-shot by a healthy margin, Elon leveled the score at 1-1. Marissa Russo found herself one-on-one with Minutewomen netminder Stephanie Gordon, fighting through Gordon's tackle to send her shot into an open net.
With the clock winding down, UMass had an opportunity to pull back in front as Bethany Houpt was sent off with a red card for a handball at 81:29, preventing a goal by freshman Moa Mattsson. Mattsson was awarded a penalty, but her low shot hit off the left post.
Undeterred, the Minutewomen continued to pressure and, moments later, junior Jess Howe fed Morrissey through traffic and Morrissey turned and drove a shot along the ground that deflected off the left post and in. The would-be game-winner, Morrissey's team-leading third goal of the season, came in the 84th minute.
UMass finished the contest with a healthy 16-5 shot advantage and led in corner kicks, 7-4. Fouls were 12-4 against the Minutewomen.
Gordon made one save for UMass. Splitting time for the Phoenix, Cosgrove and Kate Murphy stopped two and one shots, respectively.
The Minutewomen will wrap up their three-game homestand this Sunday, Sept. 4. UMass' match vs. Bryant is set to kick off at 1 p.m.
