AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore Grace Coombs' first collegiate goal was all the offense the UMass women's soccer team needed in a 1-0 upset of #20 Boston University on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field. Strong team defense helped the Minutewomen to their first win over a ranked team since defeating #15 Connecticut in 2006 as the squad improved to 3-2-1 on the season. The Terriers, after opening the year at 5-0-1 with a win and a draw against two top-10 teams, now sit at 5-2-1.

BU was quick to attack in the match, firing off seven shots in the first 15 minutes, including three on net that were stopped by junior goalkeeper Emily Cota.

Senior Julie Morrissey's attempt at goal in the 11th minute, UMass' first shot of the afternoon, was blocked, resulting in a corner kick that did not yield a scoring chance. However, the Minutewomen managed to capitalize on their second shot of the contest.

After a foul was committed by BU about 10 yards from midfield in UMass' defensive end, sophomore Lauren Skesavage took the kick for the Minutewomen. The ball was flicked past the Terriers' defenders by senior Deanna Colarossi to Coombs, who tapped it past a diving Alice Binns for the only tally of the contest at 22:42.

UMass' defended strong the rest of the way as the squad was out-shot, 22-3 on the afternoon. Cota finished with six saves, with her finest of the contest coming in the 80th minute as she touched Madison Clemens' right-footed shot from the top of the box over the cross bar.

The Terriers had several near misses, as well, including a free kick by Kylie Strom in the final seconds of the match that sailed just high over the crossbar.

BU held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks on the afternoon, while fouls were 20-19 against the Minutewomen.

UMass will be back in action this coming Fri., Sept. 16, when the squad will play host to Maine at 4 p.m. on Rudd Field.
