CHARLOTTE, N.C. - After one day of proceedings at the 2011 A-10 Championships, the UMass Minutemen sit a comfortable fourth place with 46 total points thus far. On day one, Sean Busch defended his A-10 pole vault Title to bring home the crown once again for UMass. Other notable finishes came from Zachary Koncki who set the school record in the long jump, and Sean Duncan who reached a top five UMass all-time mark.

Reaching a height of 15-9 for a second time this spring was Sean Busch (Stow, Mass.) in the men's pole vault. The mark ties the second best school mark in UMass history, along with Busch's career record. This marks the fourth A-10 Title for Busch, as he is a two time A-10 indoor pole vault champ, and now a two time outdoor A-10 pole vault one as well. He is also qualified for next weekend's IC4A Championships.

Moving their way up in the UMass record books were Sean Duncan (Gardner, Mass.) for a second straight week, and Zachary Koncki. Duncan set the third best time in UMass history in the 3000 meter steeplechase by crossing the line at 8:52.85 to pass Kevin McCusker '79. The mark also allowed Duncan to place third in the event at the A-10 Meet. Teammate, Koncki had a standout performance in the men's long jump by leaping a career best 23-10.75 in the event, good enough to set the school record and place second in the event. Koncki, the Northampton, Mass. native, is now IC4A Championship qualified.

Also qualifying for next weekend's IC4A's was Patrick McAllister in the 10K, as the harrier ran a time of 31:05.65, good enough for sixth place. David McKenna also had a strong performance. The junior set a mark of 146-07 in the discus throw, good enough for fourth place.

The men's decathlon was also an event being run at the A-10 Meet. A few notables for UMass in the first half of the event on Saturday were Conor Megee in the 100 meter dash and Mark Hewitt in the pole vault. The former placed second in a time of 11.40, while the latter jumped to a height of 6-4.25, good enough for third.

The men's track and field squad resumes action on Sunday to conclude the Atlantic 10 Championships at UNC Charlotte. Rounding out the successful performances on day one was the 4x800 meter relay team comprised of Tom Mullen, Joe Doyle, Daniel Barry, and Scott VanderMolen. The quad combined for an IC4A Championship qualifying time of 7:28.22, good enough for fourth place.
