Lightweight 4+ Takes First At Dad Vail Regatta

PHILADELPHIA - In its final race of the season, the UMass Lightweight Four finished in first place in a battle for the Robert Espeseth Trophy at the 2011 Dad Vail Regatta this weekend. The Minutewomen finished the final race with a time of 7:40.08. The Novice Eight placed fifth in its final race for the Sara Vaughan Trophy with a time of 7:31.64.
The Lightweight Four had the top time of any competitor with a first place finish in its preliminary heat with a time of 7:58.90, with Stetson University finishing four seconds back to also reach the final event. In the Novice Eight preliminary, the Minutewomen placed third (7:34.22) before narrowly defeating Drexel, Villanova and Grand Valley by just over a second with a time of 7:15.09 to reach the final.
Massachusetts had two boats entered in the Single race, with Emily Boucher and Beth Paret both finishing in fourth place of their respective heats with times of 9:14.10 and 8:41.96. Boucher finished in fourth again in the finals at 8:32.60 while Paret clocked in ten seconds later in fifth place with a time of 8:43.28.
The UMass Varsity Eight reached the semifinal with a second place finish in its preliminary race (6:55.80), two second behind Buffalo. The Minutewomen were then forced to the petite final after finishing third in the semifinals (7:03.03), where UMass then finished fifth.
