AMHERST, Mass. - After a three-pointer by Alex Gensler at the buzzer forced overtime, the UMass women's basketball team fell to Duquesne, 84-79, on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. Despite battling hard throughout regulation, the Minutewomen (6-17, 2-6 A-10) were unable to overcome the momentum shift in the extra period as the Dukes (19-3, 6-1 A-10) rallied for their 11th win in the past 12 games.
Cerie Mosgrove, who broke the UMass single season three-point record of 58 with her fourth trey of the night, finished with her sixth double-double of the season. Mosgrove paced the squad with 21 points and 13 rebounds, both career highs for the senior. Following close behind with her seventh career double-double, Jasmine Watson totaled 18 points, 10 boards and four steals. Dee Montgomery added 13 points, seven assists and six rebounds, while Shakia Robinson was the fourth Minutewoman in double figures with 11 points. Senior Megan Zullo contributed 10 assists, eight points and three steals, as well.
Duquesne started off with the first two baskets off the contest to begin with a 5-0 advantage and pushed it to a nine-point edge at 19-10 on a three by Gensler at the 12:33 mark. UMass closed the deficit to three on two occasions, but the Dukes still maintained a seven point advantage, 27-20 with 7:26 left in the half.
Then, at the 6:54 mark, junior Emilie Teuscher drained a trey that began a 17-3 run for the Minutewomen to close out the half. Mosgrove hit four from beyond the arc during that stretch and finished the period 5-for-5 on her way to the program single season three-point record. UMass held a 37-30 lead at the intermission, aided by 8-for-9 (88.9%) shooting from three-point range.
At the start of the second, Duquesne trimmed the UMass advantage down to two in the first 1:15 of the period. However, the Minutewomen responded with eight straight points to push their lead to double digits for the first time, 47-37 with 17:17 on the clock. UMass went on to lead by as many as 13 before Gensler helped the Dukes pull within striking distance with eight straight points.
In the final nine minutes of the second half, the teams were separated by four points or less, including six ties. Duquesne briefly regained the lead on a free throw by Gensler with 1:23 remaining, but Montgomery's layup with 34 ticks to go put the Minutewomen back in front, 70-69. After both sides split on trips to the free throw line, Montgomery converted a pair to move the UMass advantage to 73-70 with two seconds remaining.
However, Wumi Agunbiade managed to get the ball up the floor to Gensler for a desperation three, which banked in at the buzzer to force overtime.
The Minutewomen were unable to take back the momentum in the extra frame, making just 1-of-7 field goal attempts in the period, compared to Duquesne's 4-for-5 shooting.
UMass finished the contest 26-of-61 (42.6%) overall, 10-for-22 (45.5%) from three point range and 17-of-24 (70.8%) at the foul line. The Dukes made 31-of-64 (48.4%) overall, 9-of-22 (40.9%) from beyond the arc and 13-of-19 (68.4%) at the charity stripe. The Minutewomen held a commanding 42-32 edge on the boards and out scored Duquesne in second chance points (17-7) and points off turnovers (23-18).
Gensler contributed 27 points and five assists for the Dukes, while Vanessa Abel had 18 points and five helpers. Agunbiade tallied 13 points and eight rebounds and Orsi Szecsi was the fourth Duquesne player in double figures with 11 points.
UMass will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 5, playing host to Charlotte on Pink Zone Day. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
