Charlotte Shoots Past Women's Basketball, 80-53

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass women's basketball team could not recover from an 0-for-9 shooting drought at the start of the contest, falling to Charlotte 80-53 on Saturday afternoon at the Mullins Center. The loss leaves the Minutewomen at 6-18 overall and 2-7 in the Atlantic 10, while the 49ers pick up their ninth consecutive road victory to improve to 18-5, 5-2 conference action.
With her 13th straight game in double figures, senior Cerie Mosgrove led UMass with 18 points, including a 3-for-5 clip from three point range and 5-for-5 at the free throw line. Sophomore Jasmine Watson followed 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while senior Stephanie Lawrence added seven points in 11 minutes.
With the Minutewomen starting the contest, 1-for-10 from the field, Charlotte managed to build a 12-2 lead as Kendra Holmes hit a three from the top of the key 13:38 left in the opening half. The 49ers extended their advantage out to 22 with 1:11 remaining in the period before Lawrence sunk two free throws to bring UMass back to within 41-21 at the intermission.
Despite improving their shooting percentage in the second half, the Minutewomen could not bring the deficit under 20 the rest of the way. Charlotte finished the contest shooting 56.4% (31-for-55) overall, 55.6% (10-for-18) from three-point range and 88.9% (8-for-9) at the free throw line. UMass shot 17-for-57 (29.8%) overall, 5-for-7 (29.4%) from beyond the arc and made 14-of-16 (87.5%) at the charity stripe. The 49ers out-rebounded the Minutewomen, 37-28, held a 36-18 advantage in points in the paint and led in fast break points, 8-0.
Shannon McCallum paced four double-digit scorers for Charlotte, totaling 18 points, while Jennifer Hailey contributed a double-double with 12 points and a game-best 11 rebounds. Holmes and Epiphany Woodson added 11 points apiece with Holmes dishing 10 assists, as well.
UMass will be on the road for its next two contests, beginning at Dayton on Wednesday, Feb 9, at 11:00 a.m.
