Pereira Named UMass Athlete Of The Week

AMHERST, Mass. - UMass hockey sophomore forward Michael Pereira was named the UMass Athletics Athlete of the Week after scoring two goals and adding two assists in weekend wins over Holy Cross and Northeastern. Pereira had a goal and an assist in each game as UMass extended its winning streak to three.

The West Haven, Conn., native will be honored this Wednesday at the Weekly UMass Sports Luncheon held in Room 1009 of the Campus Center from Noon to 1:15 PM. Along with Pereira and UMass hockey coach Don "Toot" Cahoon, football head coach Kevin Morris along with a men's basketball assistant coach will be the guest speakers. For $11, fans can enjoy a salad-to-dessert buffet while hearing updates from the guest speakers.

Pereira currently ranks third on the team in points (12) bolstered by a team-high seven goals through 10 games. In 44 career games, he has 19 goals and 18 assists (37 points) which ranks second among active UMass skaters.

Nationally, Pereira ranks 17th in goals per game (0.70) and sixth in power play goals (4).

In Hockey East action, he ranks third in goal scoring, is tied for 1st in power play points (4g, 2a, 6 pts) and is tied for second in power play goals.

UMass will host Maine this Friday at the Mullins Center with the opening faceoff set for 7 PM before heading to UMass Lowell on Saturday.
