PROVIDENCE, R.I. - A Conor Sheary goal to draw within one with 4:31 remaining and some late pressure with the goalie pulled was not enough for the Mass Attack on Saturday night as UMass (1-1-1) fell to Providence (2-0-0) by a score of 6-4 at Schneider Arena. Danny Hobbs led the Minutemen with a pair of goals, Adam Phillips scored once, and T.J. Syner recorded three assists.
Sheary made it a one-goal game with 4:31 left in the third period, ringing a shot from the left circle off the inside of the post and in for his first goal of the season, making it 5-4. The goal came late in a power play with Colin Shea and Michael Marcou assisting.
The Minutemen pulled goalie Jeff Teglia with 1:29 left, but Myles Harvey tallied his second goal of the game with a shot from the red line with 27 seconds remaining, making it 6-4.
Teglia relieved starter Kevin Boyle with 4:08 left in the second period after PC's fifth goal. Boyle finished with 13 saves while Teglia stopped all eight he faced.
Providence took a 5-3 lead into the second intermission after a wild second stanza that saw six goals scored, three for each side. Hobbs started the scoring 1:15 into the period before Tim Schaller came right back for PC with a short-handed goal 45 seconds later.
Adam Phillips made it 3-2 when he scored off a rebound 6 minutes into the period. Freshman Steven Guzzo recorded the first point of his collegiate career with his assist on play.
The teams would exchange three more goals in the second, Derek Army picking up his second of the game at 13:08, Hobbs getting his second of the night and third of the season at 14:42, and Billy Simon giving PC the 5-3 lead at 15:52, resulting in Teglia taking over for Boyle in goal.
Providence took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission when Myles Harvey scored with 55 seconds left in the period, just five seconds into a power play after Oleg Yevenko was called for cross check with 1:00 remaining.
The Friars grabbed the early lead 2:01 into the game when Army scored on a 3-on-2 rush during a 4-on-4 situation.
Final shots were 27-26 in favor of the Friars. UMass was 2-of-9 on the power play, while PC was 1-of-4.
UMass returns to action on Friday when it travels to Boston College for a 7 p.m. game.
