ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Despite a spirited second half rally to erase a double-digit deficit, the UMass women's basketball team was unable to sustain the comeback momentum and suffered a 62-51 setback at St. Bonaventure on Saturday. The loss leaves the Minutewomen at 6-16 on the season, 2-5 in the Atlantic 10, while the Bonnies improve to 15-7, 5-2 in the conference.
Senior Cerie Mosgrove logged her fifth double-double of the season, registering 18 points and matching her career high with 11 rebounds. Sophomore Jasmine Watson followed with 10 points and eight boards, while junior Emilie Teuscher added 10 points. Senior Megan Zullo handed out six assists and Kelly Robinson dished four to go along with three steals.
St. Bonaventure sprinted out to a nine-point advantage, leading 14-5 with 14:27 on the clock in the first after UMass held a brief 3-2 lead in the first minute of play. But before the Bonnies could pull away any further, the Minutewomen strung together a 7-0 run, pulling back to within two, 14-12, on a pair of free throws by Jasmine Watson at the 9:17 mark.
St. Bonaventure later responded with three straight buckets to push the margin to double digits for the first time, 25-14 with 4:40 remaining in the period. After a layup by Doris Ortega gave the Bonnies their largest lead of the half at 29-17, Teuscher knocked down a three-pointer in the final minute of the frame to trim the deficit to 29-20 at the intermission.
After going back down by 12 again in the first minute of the second half, a trey from Mosgrove jump started an 8-0 UMass run that closed the gap to four. The Minutewomen eventually tied the score at 40 with 12:04 to play on another Mosgrove three. The teams traded baskets on the next several possessions until Mosgrove's layup at 9:58 gave UMass a two point advantage at 46-44.
That was as close as the Minutewomen would come to victory, however, as St. Bonaventure outscored UMass 18-5 in the remainder of the period.
The Minutewomen recovered from shooting 5-for-26 (19.2%) in the first half by making 12-of-24 (50%) in the second to finish at 34.0% (17-for-50). From beyond the arc, the squad made 7-of-18 (38.9%) and converted 10-of-16 (62.5%) at the free throw line. The Bonnies made 21-for-52 (40.4%) from the field, 5-of-19 (26.3%) from three and were 15-for-19 (78.9%) at the charity stripe.
Megan Van Tatenhove paced St. Bonaventure with 20 points, 13 rebounds and six steals. Cara Gustafson followed with 12 points and seven boards and Alaina Walker contributed 11 points and six rebounds.
UMass returns home on Wednesday, Feb. 2, when the squad will play host to Duquesne at 7 p.m. in the Mullins Center.
