BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Vermont Catamounts scored two goals in the first period en route to a 2-1 win over the UMass hockey team (5-12-3, 4-7-4 HEA) on Friday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse. Conor Sheary scored the lone goal of the evening for the Minutemen, while Dan Lawson had a goal and an assist for the Catamounts (5-12-4, 3-8-3 HEA). Paul Dainton made 26 saves in goal for the Mass Attack, which will look to bounce back tomorrow night when the two teams square off in the series finale at 7 PM.
Massachusetts held a slight 29-28 edge in shots for the game and won 32-of-55 faceoffs. Vermont went 1-for-2 on the power play, snapping a UMass streak of 14 straight killed penalties dating back to January 7 against Northeastern. The Minutemen were 0-for-4 on the man advantage, ending a five-game streak with a power play tally.
Vermont outshot the Minutemen 13-9 and jumped out to a 2-1 lead during a fast-paced first period. Josh Burrows picked up his second goal of the season midway through the first frame with the Catamounts on the power play when he stationed himself in between the hash marks and redirected a Dan Lawson shot from the point past Dainton.
The Catamounts took a two-goal lead with 3:06 to play in the stanza as Lawson scored his second goal of the year when he took a feed from Sebastian Stalberg and fired a shot on goal from the blue line that beat Dainton over his left shoulder. Massachusetts responded 30 seconds later to cut the Vermont lead to one as Sheary buried his fourth goal of the season. After taking a pass from Chase Langeraap, Michael Pereira skated behind the net and spotted Sheary open in the slot. Pereira threaded a pass out to Sheary in front of the cage, and Sheary completed the play by rocketing a shot top shelf for the score.
The Minutemen began the period with an abbreviated five-on-three power play, and UMass nearly cashed in 20 seconds into the frame when a loose puck sat in front of Madore's net, but it was cleared just before Langeraap could get a stick on it. The line of Pereira, Sheary and Michael Lecomte continued to pressure the puck in the offensive zone throughout the stanza, and almost connected with 12 minutes left in the frame when Lecomte dished to Pereira as he cut to the net, but the shot was steered away by Madare just as Pereira was hauled down trying to crash the cage.
At the other end of the ice, Dainton kept the Minuteman deficit to one, turning away all eight Catamount shots sent his way throughout the middle frame. Kyle Medvec tested Dainton twice during the period, with one shot coming on an odd-man rush and the other off a deflection with four minutes remaining in the second stanza.
UMass battled throughout the third period in search of the tying goal, outshooting the Catamounts 9-7 for the period. Dainton was forced to make several key saves midway through the final frame to keep the Minutemen in the game as Vermont looked for an insurance marker. Massachusetts pulled Dainton in favor of the extra skater with 1:25 remaining in regulation, and generated multiple scoring opportunities by moving the puck around the offensive zone and putting shots on Madore, but could not get one by the Catamount goalkeeper before the final horn.
