Richmond Shoots Past Minutewomen, 89-63

RICHMOND, Va. - The UMass women's basketball team was unable to recover from an early 13-0 deficit, falling at Richmond 89-63 on Wednesday evening. Following the setback, the Minutewomen are now 5-12 on the season, 1-1 in the Atlantic 10, while the Spiders move to 11-5 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Sophomore Jasmine Watson logged a double-double for a third straight game with a team-leading 15 points and 11 rebounds to go along with two blocks and two steals. Watson is the first UMass player to log three straight double-doubles since Brooke Campbell accomplished the feat in 2004.
Following Watson, senior Cerie Mosgrove came up just short of third consecutive double-double, as well, contributing 11 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Kelly Robinson and senior Stephanie Lawrence both added six points apiece, while senior Megan Zullo had five points and five assists. Sophomore Shakia Robinson corralled six rebounds, including five on the offensive glass.
Richmond built a 13-0 lead just 2:46 into the contest and led by as many as 36 in the opening period after shooting 57.1% (24-for-42) overall and 63.6% (7-for-11) from beyond the arc. UMass made 9-of-25 from the floor, which included a 5-for-10 performance by Watson, who neared a double-double at halftime with 11 points and seven rebounds.
The Minutewomen came out in the second half and outscored the Spiders 40-30 after the intermission, but could not make up enough ground. UMass shot 16-for-27 (16-for-27) in the final frame to finish at 40.3% (25-for-62) and were 5-of-10 (50%) from beyond the arc to end up 5-for-16 (31.3%). The Minutewomen made 8-of-11 (72.7%) at the free throw line, as well.
Richmond shot 11-for-31 (35.5%) in the second half, 35-for-75 (47.9%) overall, made 7-of-14 (50%) from three-point range and 12-of-13 (92.3%) at the charity stripe. On the boards, the Spiders finished with a 43-35 edge over UMass.
Abby Oliver paced Richmond with 20 points and was 4-for-4 from beyond the arc. Brittani Shells chipped in with 13 points and seven rebounds, Samantha Bilney had 12 points, five rebounds and three steals and Becca Wann scored 11 in 13 minutes on the floor. Genevieve Okoro was the game's top rebounder, grabbing 11 boards for the Spiders.
UMass will be back in action on Sunday, Jan. 16, when the squad will play host to #8 Xavier at 1 p.m. in the Mullins Center.
