AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass women's basketball team led early, but was unable to hold off #8 Xavier, falling 81-55 at the Mullins Center on Sunday afternoon. Following the squad's first home game in conference play, the Minutewomen are now 5-13 (1-2 A-10), while the Musketeers move to 14-2 overall and remain undefeated in the Atlantic 10 at 3-0.
Reaching double figures for a seventh straight game, senior Cerie Mosgrove logged a team-high 20 points and 10 rebounds for UMass, including a 6-for-10 performance from beyond the arc on the way to her third double-double in the past four games. Sophomores Jasmine Watson and Shakia Robinson contributed 15 and six, respectively. Classmate Dee Mongomery dished five assists and freshman Kelly Robinson corralled a season-high five rebounds to go along with four helpers. Watson also added five blocks on the defensive end and senior Megan Zullo had four steals.
After Xavier began the contest with five straight points, the Minutewomen answered with a layup by Watson and a trey from Mosgrove to tie the score. The squads traded baskets over the next minute before Mosgrove hit another three-pointer to give UMass a 10-7 lead with 15:28 on the clock.
The advantage was brief, however as the Musketeers quickly erased the deficit by scoring the next 14 straight points. Watson's three-point play with 2:15 remaining in the opening period kept UMass within reach of Xavier at 37-27, but the Musketeers ended the half with a 5-0 stretch to lead 42-27 at the intermission.
Xavier then put the game out of reach with a 16-0 run to open the second half and led by 24 or more the rest of the way.
The Minutewomen made 20-of-63 (31.7%) from the field against the Musketeers and were 8-for-23 (34.8%) from three point range and 7-for-12 (58.3%) at the free throw line. Xavier, who out-rebounded UMass 63-33, shot 38.8% (31-for-80) overall, 34.6% (9-for-26) from beyond the arc and 71.4% (10-for-14) at the charity stripe.
For Xavier, Amber Harris paced four double-digit scores with 19 points, while completing her double-double with 18 rebounds and also chipping in with three assists, two blocks and four steals. Ta'Shia Phillips contributed a double-double as well, on 15 points and 15 rebounds. Tyeasha Moss and Special Jennings had 11 points apiece and handed out six and eight assists, respectively. Megan Askew totaled eight points and seven rebounds and Katie Rutan added nine points off the bench.
