UMass' Leigh Signs With Seattle Mariners

AMHERST, Mass. - Right-handed pitcher Bryan Leigh, who completed his collegiate career with the UMass baseball team this spring, inked a contract with the Seattle Mariners on Thursday. Pending a physical, Leigh has been assigned to the club's Rookie affiliate, the Pulaski Mariners of the Appalachian League in Pulaski, Va.

Leigh is the second Minuteman to sign a professional contract this summer. Fellow UMass hurler Nick Serino was taken in the 37th round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Washington Nationals and is currently pitching for the team's Rookie affiliate in the Gulf Coast League. In Mike Stone's 23 seasons as UMass head coach, more than 30 Minutemen have gone on to play at the professional level.

As a senior in 2010, Leigh enjoyed is finest campaign in a UMass uniform, leading the squad with six wins and boasting the top ERA among the team's starters, 4.80 over 69.1 innings on the mound. Leigh tossed four complete games, good for third-most in the Atlantic 10. He totaled 55 strikeouts to just 20 walks, including fanning a career-high 11 vs. Saint Louis on Apr. 24.

In conference play, Leigh finished fourth in the A-10 with a 2.98 ERA over seven appearances. He compiled a 5-2 record with 39 strikeouts and 10 walks in 48.1 innings on the hill. The two-time A-10 Pitcher of the Week ranked fifth in wins and opponent batting average (.247) in Atlantic 10 contests, as well.

Leigh came to UMass as a sophomore after transferring from Barry University. In his three seasons with the Minutemen, Leigh posted nine wins, four saves, 128 strikeouts and a 4.62 ERA in 163.2 career innings.
