All Boats Reach Semis In Day One At Dad Vails

PHILADELPHIA - The UMass rowing team competed in five races in Day One at the 72nd annual Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia on Friday, with each boat reaching tomorrow's semifinals. The Minutewomen took first place finishes in the Pair, Varsity Heavyweight 4+, and the Varsity 8+ Reps. In addition, the Novice 4+ placed second in its heats while the Novice 8+ snuck into the semis with a third place finish. Massachusetts' Lightweight 8+ boat will also race tomorrow at 2:10 PM for the Dennis Kamrad Trophy.

UMass' Heavyweight 4+ boat got the Minutewomen off to a fast start with an eight second win over North Carolina with a time of 7:21.314. The boat will compete in tomorrow semifinals against the US Military Academy, Delaware, Buffalo, Purdue and St. Thomas at 9:41 AM.

Emily Grogan and Kelsey Schachter continued the torrid pace for Massachusetts by knocking off Georgia Tech by ten seconds, clocking in at 8:01.602. The tandem will race against Loyola, Clarkson, Vermont and NY Maritime tomorrow with the fastest two boats reaching the finals.

Although the Varsity 8+ finished third in its opening heat with a time of 6:51.122, the Minutewomen fought back with a tough win over Loyola and Old Dominion at 7:03.771 to secure a spot in tomorrow semis. The boat will compete against Delaware, Purdue, St. Joseph's, San Diego State and Jacksonville, with the quickest two boats reaching tomorrow afternoon's final.

The Massachusetts Novice 4+ will square off with Penn State, Buffalo, Ohio State, Fairfield and Charleston College after a second place finish in its heat with a time of 8:07.380.

The Novice 8+ will race in its semifinal race Saturday morning at 7:30 AM after the Minutewomen crossed the line third at 8:07.134 behind St. Joe's and Drexel. UMass will compete against Brock, Buffalo, Grand Valley and Cincinnati in the semis.
