AMHERST, Mass. - Senior Brian Miller, sophomore Katie Bettencourt and senior Brian Baudinet were selected as tri-UMass Athletes of the Week, it was announced on Monday. All three will be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon this Wednesday, May, 5, held in Campus Center room 1009.
Miller earns the recognition for a second consecutive week as he won the high jump title and was named Most Outstanding Male Field Performer at the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which UMass hosted this past weekend. One week after setting the school high jump record, Miller improved upon his mark, clearing a height of 7-00.25, and also surpassed the previous A-10 record.
Bettencourt hit a sizzling .692 last week, leading the No. 21 UMass softball team to four conference victories. She went 9-for-13 at the plate, drove in seven runs and belted a home run and three doubles for a 1.154 slugging percentage. In game one of doubleheader vs. Rhode Island, Bettencourt reached base in all four plate appearances, including a two-run home run and a RBI single. This past Sunday in game one against Dayton, she was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a RBI. Down 2-0 in game two against the Flyers, Bettencourt hit a bases-loaded double to bring in three runs and lead UMass to a 5-4 win.
On Sunday, May 2, Baudinet carried the Minutemen to a series-clinching victory over George Washington, becoming the first player in over 130 years of UMass baseball to hit four home runs in a single game. Baudinet drove in half of UMass' runs in the 14-13 win, going 5-for-5 in the contest and scoring four times. His record-setting homer in the eighth proved to be the deciding run.
Baudinet hit a team-best .615 (8-for-13) with a 1.692 slugging percentage and 22 total bases in a 2-1 week for the Minutemen, who claimed their fourth consecutive Atlantic 10 series. In UMass' pair of victories, Baudinet hit 8-for-9 (.889) with six of his eight hits going for extra bases. He scored five and drove in eight in the three-game weekend.
