CINCINNATI, Ohio - The UMass baseball team was shut out for just the third time this season, falling to Xavier, 9-0 in the teams' Atlantic 10 series opener on Friday afternoon at Hayden Field. With the setback, the Minutemen are now 17-24 overall and 11-11 in A-10 games, while the Musketeers improve to 20-30, 13-9 in the conference.
Drew Schmidt and Phil Bauer began Xavier's half of the third with consecutive singles before the next batter, Ben Thomas, put the Musketeers on the board with a three-run homer to center field. Bobby Freking made it back-to-back long balls to increase the advantage to 4-0.
Xavier then added two more runs with two down in the bottom of the fifth. Thomas drew a one-out walk, moved to third on a single down the left field line by Zac Richard and scored on an error. Richard then came home on a single to left by Neil Lindgren.
John McCambridge made it a 7-0 lead with a two-out RBI in the bottom of the seventh, driving in Lindgren, who reached base with a single up the middle. Schmidt plated McCambridge for the team's eighth run with another RBI single.
Thomas tacked on a ninth run in the Musketeers' final trip to the plate with a leadoff home run to left.
Junior Nick Serino took the loss for UMass (2-6), allowing eight runs, six earned, on 11 hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Tommy Shirley threw eight scoreless innings for Xavier to log the win (2-3). Shirley scattered five hits with no walks and eight strikeouts.
For the Minutemen, juniors Eric Fredette and Peter Copa combined for four of UMass' seven hits, all singles.
Lindgren led five Musketeers with multiple hits, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Thomas went 2-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored.
The teams will be back in action tomorrow, May 15, with game two beginning at 1 p.m.
