Roa Sets School Record At A-10s

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass women's track and field team played host to the Atlantic 10 Championships on Saturday afternoon. The Minutewomen amassed 32 points and finished day one in fifth place out of the twelve teams at the meet. Karen Roa set a new school record while Shiyi Zan set a UMass top five all-time mark.
Two weeks after she set a school record in the steeplechase at the Larry Ellis Invitational, sophomore Karen Roa bested her own record at the A-10 Championships. Roa's time of 10:50.10 in the 3,000 meter steeple chase was good for fifth place overall at the meet, and qualifies her for the ECAC Championships.
Shiyi Zan set the fourth fastest all-time mark at UMass in the 10,000 meters by crossing at 37:20.21. Zan took eighth place and qualified for the New England and ECAC Championships with the time.
Senior thrower Lisa Wilson continued her excellent season with a second place mark of 151-04 in the discus. Wilson has already qualified for the New England and ECAC Championships in the event.
In the long jump, Ida Okkonen grabbed fifth place with a mark of 18-04.25 and qualified for the New England Championships. Katherine Finnegan also qualified for New Englands with her seventh place mark of 17-10.25.
The 4X800 meter relay team of Courtney Baldwin, Madeline Nally, Gina Perno, and Deanna Julian grabbed fifth and qualified for the ECAC Championships with a time of 9:08.28. Nicole Pompei took third place in the pole vault with a mark of 11-07.75, and rounding out the scorers for day one was Rebecca Banker who placed fifth in the high jump (5-03.00).
In the preliminary round of the 100 meter hurdles, Alexandra Haller qualified for the New England Championships with a time of 15.87. She took sixth in her heat.
Day two of the A-10 Championship meet will commence Sunday, May 2 at 9:00 a.m. at the UMass Track and Field Complex.
