BROCKTON, Mass. - The UMass baseball team overcame a 9-3 deficit, outscoring Harvard 12-2 from the bottom of the fourth inning on to claim a 15-11 victory over the Crimson on Wednesday afternoon in the Beanpot consolation game at Campanelli Stadium. With the win, the Minutemen improve to 8-20, while Harvard falls to 13-21 on the year.

Harvard wasted no time getting on the board, scoring three runs on four hits in the top of the first. Tyler Albright plated the first two with a single up the middle and scored on an RBI base knock by Cole Arledge.

UMass took one of the runs back in its first turn at bat. Junior Eric Fredette ripped a double to left and later came home on an error.

After sending the Crimson down in order in the top of the second, the Minutemen managed to tie the score at 3-3, plating a pair in the bottom half of the frame. Senior Brian Baudinet led off with a single to left and with one away, senior Mike Gedman lofted a home run over the fence in right.

However, Harvard responded by scoring three in both the third and fourth innings. Albright's RBI double to left center put the Crimson back on top, while Marcus Way followed with a two-run homer to left to increase the margin to 6-3.

Sean O'Hara's had an RBI ground out to send in Harvard's next run and Albright drove a two-run single down the left field line that put the Crimson up by six.

Trailing 9-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth, the Minutemen came storming back with five runs on three hits in the frame. After junior Peter Copa started things off with a single to right center, Mike Gedman sent a 0-2 pitch out of the park in left for his second homer of the day. Matt Gedman drove in sophomore Tom Conley for the team's sixth run with a sacrifice fly to left. Sophomore Alex Fischer and Fredette both crossed the plate on errors, trimming the deficit to 9-8.

Matt Gedman roped a double to deep center to bring in Fredette for the tying run in the bottom of the sixth. UMass then took a 10-9 lead on an RBI groundout by senior Mike Donato and added an 11th run as Matt Gedman came home on an error.

Harvard followed up by scoring twice in the top of the seventh to tie things up at 11. After Albright and Way started off the rally with two straight singles, Taylor Helgren's double down the left field line brought in Albright. Way then scored from third on an RBI groundout.

The Minutemen countered with a four-run bottom of the seventh, which proved to be the difference in the game. Cusick and Fredette connected for back-to-back singles with two away. Cusick scored on an error for the go-ahead run and, following an intentional walk to Matt Gedman, Donato dropped a two-RBI single into left that scored Fredette and Gedman. Baudinet's fourth triple of the season plated Donato for the final run of the contest.

In 2.2 innings of relief, sophomore Leif Sorenson did not allow a run on two hits with no walks and two strikeouts to log the win (2-1) for UMass. Zachary Hofeld suffered the loss (0-2) for the Crimson as he surrendered four runs on three hits, walking one.

In a balanced attack, all nine Minutemen logged at least one hit on the afternoon, paced by Fredette's 3-for-5 outing and four runs scored. Mike Gedman drove in four with a pair of homers (2-for-4) and two runs scored, while Donato collected three RBI.

Albright led the way for Harvard with five RBI, three runs scored and a 4-for-5 showing at the plate. Saumuel Frankin hit 2-for-4 and scored three, as well.

UMass will be back in action on Friday, Apr. 23, when the squad will open its Atlantic 10 series against Saint Louis at 3 p.m. on Earl Lorden Field.
