STILLWATER, Okla. - The UMass baseball team was unable to overcome an early inning deficit, dropping a 10-1 decision to Oklahoma State in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium. The Minutemen had several opportunities to cut into the Cowboys' (6-2) lead, but stranded 11 runners on base in the contest and fall to 0-2.

Oklahoma jumped on top early, batting around in the first and taking a 6-0 lead. After sending the UMass batters down in order in the first, Davis Duren began the Cowboys' half of the inning with a ground ball single up the middle. Walks to Dane Philips and Tom Belza followed, loading the bases for Mark Ginther who deposited the first pitch of his at bat over the right field fence for a grand slam. Nico Rosthenhausler sent a double into the gap in left center and later crossed the plate on a double off the wall in right by Josh Botts. Botts stole third and came home on a sacrifice fly by Kevin David. Dusty Harvard, the ninth batter to come to the plate in the frame, singled to right, chasing sophomore Glen Misho from the game in his first career start.

Ginther added OSU's seventh run, leading off the bottom of the second with a triple to left center and scoring on a wild pitch.

UMass threatened to get on the board in the top of the third as walks to Tom Conley, Garrett Glashoff and Eric Fredette loaded the bases for the Minutemen with one down in the frame, but Thomas Keeling worked out of the jam by striking out Cameron McMullen and Mike Gedman to end the inning. Matt Gedman broke up Keeling's bid for a no-hitter in with one away in the fourth, poking a single through the right side of the infield.

In their following trip to the plate, UMass managed to push across a run. Senior Brian Baudinet singled up the middle and later went to third on an error following a hit by Fredette. Baudinet then came in to score on a double play ball to put the Minutemen on the board.

The Cowboys took the run right back, however. In the bottom of the fifth Dean Green legged out a leadoff double and Duren plated him home with a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 8-1. OSU went on to tack on another pair of runs in the eighth, courtesy of RBI doubles by Phillips and Belza.

Misho suffered the setback (0-1) for the Minutemen, lasting two-thirds of an inning and allowing six runs on five hits and walking two. Keeling earned the victory (1-2) for Oklahoma State as he worked six innings and gave up just one unearned run, scattering four hits with six walks and 10 strikeouts.

Matt Gedman was the lone UMass batter to tally multiple hits in the contest, going 2-for-4. Baudinet, Fredette and McMullen accounted for the squad's remaining base knocks, all singles.

Ginther paced the Cowboys with a 2-for-5 performance, tallying a home run and a triple and totaling four RBI and two runs scored. Harvard went 3-for-4, while Duren and Phillips scored twice each.
