STILLWATER, Okla. - Despite six strikeouts by junior left-hander Nick Serino in his first outing of the season, timely two-out hitting by Oklahoma State burned the UMass baseball team, which dropped its series finale against the Cowboys, 11-0, at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium on Sunday afternoon. OSU is now 8-2 to start the year, while the Minutemen fall to 0-4.
In the bottom of the second, Oklahoma State took a 2-0 lead with three straight two-out hits. Dean Green deposited a double into the corner in left and Dane Phillips traded places with Green, knocking in the first run of the game. Kevin David followed with a single through the left side that plated Phillips.
The Cowboys added two more with two down in the bottom of the fourth. Phillips drove a single up the middle to score Mark Ginther who led off the frame with a single to left and then came home on a base knock to center by David.
Then in the bottom of the sixth, OSU pushed its advantage to 7-0. Green sent a two-run homer over the wall in right and Phillips crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Dusty Harvard.
Another two-out hit by David yielded the Cowboys' eighth and ninth runs. In the bottom of the seventh, David doubled down the left field line to bring around Green and Phillips. Finally with two down in the eighth, Ginther hit a two-run shot to left that capped off the scoring.
UMass' best chance to score came in the fifth when sophomore Tom Conley and junior Matt Gedman began the frame with back-to-back singles, but the Minutemen were unable to advance a runner beyond second base in the contest.
Serino suffered the setback (0-1) for UMass, allowing six runs on nine hits, walking one. Brad Propst picked up the win (1-0) for Oklahoma State, pitching eight shutout innings and scattering seven hits. Propst walked one and struck out three, as well.
Seven different Minutemen accounted for the team's seven hits, all singles. Senior Mike Gedman drew the squad's lone walk.
Phillips paced the Cowboy's offense with a 4-for-4 showing at the plate that included two doubles. He scored four and drove in two. David went 3-for-3 with a double and four RBI, while Green was 3-for-4 with a double and a home run, two RBI and three runs scored.
UMass will be back in action on Tuesday, March 16, when the squad will play at No. 15 Oklahoma. First pitch is slated for 8 p.m. Eastern time.
