Baseball Falls To Oklahoma State, 20-1

STILLWATER, Okla. - The UMass baseball team dropped its second game of a doubleheader at Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon, falling by the score of 20-1 at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium. With the setback, the Minutemen are now 0-3 to start the season, while the Cowboys improve to 7-2.
Oklahoma State began the contest with a 1-0 lead after one as Dane Phillips knocked a single through the right side and crossed the plate on a two-out double off the right field fence by Mark Ginther. The Cowboys then added three more in the bottom of the third. Dusty Harvard lofted a leadoff homer to right, while Davis Duren doubled to left center and scored on a balk. Tom Belza drew a walk and came in for the squad's fourth run on an RBI groundout by Ginther.
A seven-run fourth broke the game open for OSU, helping the Cowboys to an 11-0 advantage. Luis Uribe began the scoring with a two-run single up the middle that sent home Dean Green and Josh Botts, part of a string of five straight hits to begin the frame. Green capped off the inning with a two-run double that sent around Belza and Ginther.
In the top of the fifth, UMass broke up the shutout as senior Brian Baudinet drilled a double to straightaway center and scored on an error after advancing to third on an infield hit by junior Eric Fredette.
Oklahoma State tacked on two more runs in the sixth on an RBI single up the middle by Nico Rosthenhausler and seven more in the seventh.
Sophomore Isaac Oakley took the loss (0-1) in his collegiate debut, as he let up nine runs, seven earned, on nine hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Andrew Heaney earned the win for the Cowboys, pitching seven innings and allowing just one run on nine hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
Fredette continued his hot start to his career in a Minuteman uniform, going 2-for-2 at the plate. Baudinet finished 3-for-4 at the dish with a double and a run scored, while junior Peter Copa batted 2-for-4.
Duren was one of six Oklahoma State players to tally multiple hits in the contest with a 3-for-5 performance, including two doubles three RBI and three runs scored. Phillips hit 3-for-6 and scored three and Rosthenhausler and Uribe drove in three runs apiece. Harvard went 3-for-5 and scored three, as well.
UMass will wrap up its series with the Cowboys tomorrow afternoon, Sunday, March 14, with game four set to begin at 2 p.m. Eastern.
