Minutewomen Battle, But LSU Prevails, 63-51

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Despite a gritty all-out team effort by the UMass women's basketball team, 9-0 second half run to propelled LSU to a 63-51 victory on Friday evening in the opening game of the Anaconda Sports "The Rock" Seton Hall Classic. With the setback, the Minutewomen are now 0-3 on the season, while the Tigers move their record to 1-2.
While no UMass players reached double figures, five players scored seven or more points in the contest. All nine Minutewomen that saw action grabbed at least one rebound with four individuals collecting at least four. Senior Megan Zullo totaled a team-leading nine points to go along with four rebounds and three steals. Sophomore Shakia Robinson and junior Emilie Teuscher followed with eight points apiece, while freshmen Kelly Robinson and Sara English each chipped in seven points. Senior Cerie Mosgrove corralled a squad-best five rebounds and tallied five points on a 5-for-6 performance at the free throw line.
In a back-and-forth first half that featured five ties and four lead changes neither side was able to gain more than a two-possession advantage. LaSondra Barrett's jumper with 2:19 remaining in the period gave LSU the largest lead of the period at 28-23. Free throws by Zullo and Mosgrove brought UMass back to within two before Katherine Graham managed a steal and a fast break layup as time expired to put the Tigers up 30-26, heading into the intermission.
Coming out of half time, an Adrienne Webb jumper pushed LSU's advantage to six, but a pair of threes from Zullo and Kelly Robinson tied the score for the sixth time at 32-32. Then, in a span of 2:41, the Tigers scored nine straight points and never looked back. The Minutewomen were unable to come any closer than an eight-point deficit the rest of the way.
Barrett finished with a game-high 17 points, which included a 9-for-10 showing at the charity stripe, while also grabbing four steals. Webb also finished in double figures with 15 points, while Katherine Graham followed with nine points and six boards. Taylor Turnbow contributed seven points, eight rebounds and three blocks.
LSU shot 20-for-58 (34.5%) overall, 4-for-18 (22.2%) from three and made 19-of-27 (70.4%) free throws. UMass was 15-for-47% (31.9%) overall, 6-for-19 (31.6%) from three and 15-for-22 (68.2%) at the free throw line. The Tigers out-rebounded the Minutewomen, 38-33 and led in points in the paint, 26-11.
UMass will be back in action on Sunday, Nov. 21, when the Minutewomen will take on Seton Hall at 4 p.m.
