PROVIDENCE - Providence College received goals from three different scorers to defeat the UMass Minutemen (0-4-2, 0-2-2 HEA) in a physical battle Saturday night at Schneider Arena, 3-2. Joel Hanley scored his first collegiate goal for the Mass Attack and Michael Pereira made it close with a third period tally, while Paul Dainton made 24 saves. Alex Beaudry got the start for the Friars (2-4-1, 2-2-1 HEA), making 32 saves. Massachusetts will host two home games next weekend, beginning with Army on Friday night at 7 PM.

UMass outshot the Friars 34-27 for the game while Providence held a 47-34 edge in faceoffs. The Friars were 2-for-4 on the power play while the Minutemen went 1-for-8. The Minuteman defense held a majority of the Providence offensive shots to the perimeter of Dainton's net throughout the game, with just 10 of the Friars 27 total shots coming from grade-A range.

The Friars outshot UMass 13-12 in the first period and jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Kyle MacKinnon and Aaron Jamnick, but the Minutemen battled back with a goal of their own with three minutes to play in the frame. Providence netted the game's first goal eight minutes into the stanza after Massachusetts got caught with four players in the Friar zone during an offensive rush. Ben Farrer and MacKinnon counterattacked for a two-on-one chance on Dainton, where Farrer hit MacKinnon with a pass in the shot for the wrister past Dainton.

Providence made it 2-0 with four minutes to play in the period with its first power play goal in 21 opportunities. Derek Army began the play at the goal line when he fed Daniel New, who was open at the point. New held the puck for a moment before spotting Jamnick alone on the edge of the right faceoff dot, who fired a wrist shot past Dainton for his second goal of the season.

The Minutemen were awarded a power play after Ian O'Connor was assessed a two-minute minor for unsportsmanlike conduct, and UMass wasted no time in capitalizing on the man advantage. Branden Gracel won a clean faceoff back to the point where Hanley was positioned. Hanley then settled the puck before rocketing a slap shot that ricocheted off a Providence defender before beating Beaudry low, just 41 seconds after the Jannick score.

UMass continued to pressure throughout the second period, outchancing the Friars and outshooting them 11-8. The Minutemen had two chances on the power play during the frame, putting three shots on goal, but Beaudry was there to keep the game deadlocked. Dainton nearly got into the offense with six minutes to play in the period when he released the puck from his glove after a save and flipped it over everyone out of the UMass zone. The airborne puck fell into the Providence zone where Marc Concannon hustled to reach it to create a scoring chance for the Mass Attack.

Massachusetts was awarded three straight power plays to start the third period, and nearly tied the game during the second man-advantage of the frame when Gracel dished to Power at the doorstep. Beaudry made the initial save but the puck fluttered through the crease and just past the right post. Providence capitalized on its lone power play of the period when O'Connor skated out from the corner and fired a wrist shot over Dainton's glove for his second of the season and a 3-1 Friar lead.

The Minutemen stormed right back, however, as Pereira notched his third goal of the year following a UMass clear from the defensive zone. The puck was sent through neutral ice and into the Providence end. Pereira and a Friar defenseman raced towards the loose puck as Beaudry left his crease to capture it. Beaudry ran over with his defenseman, and Pereira escaped the collision poked the puck into the open net from a tough angle to make it a one-goal game.

UMass continued to create chances following the goal, and pulled Dainton with a minute remaining in regulation. Chase Langeraap almost tied the score in the waning seconds off a feed from T.J. Syner, but Beaudry turned away the bid.
