Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass women's soccer team played a strong second half, but could not overcome two quick first half goals by Charlotte in a 2-1 setback at Rudd Field on Friday afternoon. Following the loss, the Minutewomen sit at 3-7-0 (0-1-0 A-10), while the 49ers are now 8-3-0 and open the Atlantic 10 season at 1-0-0.

After Charlotte was unable to capitalize on several corner kick opportunities early in the contest, the 49ers eventually came up with the first goal of the match in the 24th minute. Whitney Weinraub sent a cross to the far post that was tucked in by Macky Wingo for her fourth goal of the season.

Then, just 32 seconds later, Charlotte struck again to push their advantage to 2-0. Oni Bernard stripped the ball from UMass goalkeeper Emersyn Pullan and sent it home low into a wide open net.

At the start of the second half, Pullan came up with an early save that kept the deficit at two, while the Minutewomen countered with the next three shots in the match. What appeared to be a near miss for UMass as senior Therese Smith hit the post with a hard strike from the top of the box, turned into a goal as junior Deanna Colarossi followed the play and knocked in the rebound. The tally, which came at 54:17, was Colarossi's team-leading fifth of the season and marked the first goal for the Minutewomen against Charlotte since winning the first meeting between the squads, 2-0, on Oct. 28, 2005.

UMass kept the pressure on and had several quality scoring chances in the remainder of the match, including a ball sent towards goal from midfield that nearly found its way in on a miscue by Alex Kubrick and a free kick deep in 49ers' territory in the 82nd minute.

Charlotte finished with a slight edge in shots, 12-11, and led in corner kicks, 6-2. Fouls were 12-10 against the Minutewomen.

In her first collegiate start, Pullan made four saves in net for UMass, while Kubrick turned aside two shots for the 49ers.

The Minutewomen will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 3, as the squad will play host to Saint Louis in an Atlantic 10 contest at 1 p.m. on Rudd Field.
