Offense Explodes In Soccer's 3-0 Win Over Colgate

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass men's soccer team improved its unbeaten streak to five games and gave head coach Sam Koch his 200th win in Amherst thanks to a 3-0 shutout over Colgate on Tuesday afternoon. Chris Piekos, the nation's leader in save percentage, posted his third shutout of the year. Dominic Skrajewski, Bryant Craft and Mark DeSantis each scored for UMass which will return to action on Saturday at Rudd Field against Fordham (1 PM).
The Minutemen improve to 3-1-3 overall with their third straight win. Colgate falls to 4-4-0 overall. Koch's record now stands at 200-133-36 in 19 seasons at UMass, while overall he improves to 258-186-51.
The shutout was the fourth for UMass this season and third consecutive.
Skrajewski put UMass on the board at the 11:26 mark of the game with his first career goal. A DeSantis corner kick from the right flank was deflected by Colgate keeper Max Revell into the six-yard box where UMass defender Andrew Henshaw collected the loose ball sliding it to Skrajewski to his left. Skrajewski one-timed a shot inside the left goal post for the 1-0 lead.
Nearly five minutes later, UMass went up 2-0 thanks to Craft's penalty kick after he was fouled inside the 18-yard box at 16:04 of the match.
DeSantis tacked on an insurance goal in the 28th minute of play with a header after a shallow cross from Stuart Amick.
The three goals scored was a season high for UMass which has now scored six in the last three games. In the first four games of the season, the Minutemen manged just two.
Piekos improved his record to 2-0-2 on the year. He has allowed just one goal on the year and improved his goals against average to 0.22 while improving his save percentage to .955. Entering the match, Piekos ranked fourth nationally in goals against average and first in save percentage.
Revell played the first half in goal for Colgate allowing all three goals while making no saves. Colin Prather relieved him in the second half making one save.
UMass outshot the Raiders 11-to-8 for the game, while earning four corner kicks to three for Colgate.
Saturday's match against Fordham will wrap-up the non-conference portion of the UMass schedule. Kick-off is slated for 1 PM at Rudd Field and admission is free to all.
