AMHERST, Mass. - Tim Richardson tallied an early goal in the ninth minute of play as Fordham defeated the UMass men's soccer team 1-0 on Saturday. The loss snapped the Minutemen's five-game unbeaten streak. UMass will begin Atlantic 10 next weekend at Xavier and Dayton.
UMass falls to 3-2-3 overall, while Fordham improves to 3-5-1.
Fordham took advantage of a UMass turnover to generate the game-winning goal. Alex Brunbauer took control of the loose ball slidding a cross over to Richardson who ripped a shot from 21-yards out. His shot bent towards the right post past UMass keeper Shane Curran-Hays.
The Minutemen had a chance to equalize in the 23rd minute on a direct kick just outside the 18-yard box by Ben Arikian, but his shot glanced off the right post.
The Rams nearly added an insurance goal in the 75th minute as Matt Courtenay fired a shot earmarked for the top center, but Curran-Hays leaped to punch the shot over the cross bar.
UMass' Chris Roswess nearly tied the game in the 81st minute but his header off a corner kick was just inches wide of the left post.
With under three minutes to go, the Minutemen earned back-to-back corner kicks, but were unable to capitalize.
For the game, UMass outshot Fordham 12-to-6 and garnered seven corner kicks to just two for the Rams.
Fordham keeper Ryan Meara made four saves, while Curran-Hays made two.
