AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass men's track and field team competed Friday at the New England Championship, finishing first with a score of 46. New Hampshire is in second with 29 points. The top story of the day came from junior Andrew McCann (Fayetteville, N.Y.) who ranked first in the 10,000 meter with a time of 31;22.60 to garner 10 points for the Minutemen. In the 5,000 meter run, Jonathan Pierce (Hanover, Mass.) finished second after leading most of the way, crossing the finish line in 14:40.33. Also, a new UMass Facility record was set in the 100 meter dash. Steve Headley of Springfield College finished in 10.54 to break Jeff Smith's (Boston College) previous record of 10.56 set last year.
The men in the field accumulated 15 points for the team. In the javelin, junior Chris Vercollone (Burlington, Mass.) posted a season-best toss of 189-02 for the bronze medal. Also in the field, freshman Zach Koncki (Northampton, Mass.) long jumped 22-09.75 for a fourth place finish and five points. The rookie also qualified for the second day of competition, coming in eighth with a time of 15.45. Sophomore Sean Busch (Stow, Mass.) scored four points for the Minutemen with a vault of 15-03.00 for a fifth place finish.
After day one, sophomore Chris Dzidek (Chicopee, Mass.) finished tenth in the decathlon with 2938 points. He finished second in the shot put with a throw of 36-02.00 for 547 points.
Not qualifying for day two, but posting solid times, junior Jason Dwyer (Westwood, Mass.) finished the 400 meter hurdles in 55.95 for a 15th place finish, while Michael McDonough crossed just behind in 56.22.
The Minutemen return to action tomorrow at the UMass Track & Field Complex for the final day of the New England Championship. Events commence at 10:00 a.m.
