AMHERST, Mass. - Eight UMass women's rowers were named 2009 College Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar Athletes and senior Airlina Burrill was named to the Mid-Atlantic All-Region Second Team as announced on May 26.

Burrill, Emily Hagan, Erin Kelly, Kathryn Kern, Teresa O'Brien, Karen Plevock, Samantha Schnoerr, and Rachel Spielberg were honored as National Scholar Athletes. To earn the award, student-athletes must maintain a 3.5 cumulative grade point average, be in at least their second year of eligibility, and compete in at least 75% of the spring races or regional conference events.

For Burrill and Plevock, this is the second year that they were named to National Scholar Athletes. The eight student-athletes earning the recognition is a program high besting the six who earned the honor in 2008.

The All-Region honor capped Burrill's career where she helped UMass to three Atlantic 10 titles in four years. Burrill and Kelly were also named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team in 2009.

This is the latest honor for Kelly who was named the recipient of the 2009 Atlantic 10 Sporting Award and the 2009 UMass Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
