Men's Track & Field Competes At IC4A Championship

Princeton, N.J. - The UMass men's and women's track and field teams competed at the IC4A and ECAC Championships this weekend at Princeton University in N.J. The Minutewomen accumulated five points, while the Minutemen did not score. The top performance of the day, and all five points, came from redshirt senior Kristen Bakanowski (Northboro, Mass.), who tied her own school record with a pole vault of 12-07.50, ranking fourth at the meet. With that season-best mark, Bakanowski also qualifies for the NCAA East Regionals, joining teammate Lisa Wilson, which will take place on May 29 in Greensboro, N.C.
On day two, Lisa Wilson (Holden, Mass.) had a solid day, ranking 10th in the hammer throw with a mark of 172-10 and 11th in the discus with a toss of 139-07.
On the track, junior Brittany Bakanowski (Northboro, Mass.) finished in 1:03.80 for a 24th place finish in the 400 meter hurdles, while junior Holly Heinricher (Foxboro, Mass.) ranked 29th overall with a time of 25.29 in the 200 meter dash. The 4X8 relay squad finished 21st, posting a time of 9:13.94.
For the men on day two, the 4X400 meter relay squad (Michael McDonough, Philip Weltman, Daniel Schwartz, and Sam Laorenza) finished 25th with a time of3:19.94.
On day one, the best performance from the men came from brothers Kevin and David Johnson (Ludlow, Mass.) who finished 10th and 12th respectively in the 10,000 meter run. Kevin crossed in 30:44.68, while David finished in 30:51.44. Andrew Mulvaney (South Hadley, Mass.) ranked 15th in the race, posting a time of 30:59.55.
Also in the distance group on day one, Sean Duncan (Gardner, Mass.) and Sonny Gamble (Marlborough, Mass.) finished 18th and 20th respectively in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Duncan crossed in 9:09.91, just missing his best time of the season. Gamble, the star of last weekend steeple with a gold at the New England's, beat his season-best with a time of 9:12.85 for a 20th place finish.
Jonathan Pierce (Hanover, Mass.) crossed the 5,000 meter finish line in 14:28.47, 12 seconds faster than his previous season-best in the 5000 meter. Pierce finished 19th overall.
The Minutewomen did not compete on day one.
Both squads continue tomorrow for the final day of competition in Princeton, N.J.
