UMass Rowers Face Strong Competition at Knecht Cup

CAMDEN, N.J. - The UMass women's varsity eight placed third in the petite final at the 2009 Knecht Cup, held Friday and Saturday April 10-11 in Camden N.J. The varsity quad placed first overall, while the second varsity eight finished fifth in the grand final. The regatta provided competition for over 50 schools from all over the country. This was the last race before the Atlantic 10 Championships, held on the same river.
Buffalo won the event, with a time of 7:02.5 in the grand final. Placing second was Rhode Island, followed by Drexel, Wisconsin, UNH, and Delaware. UMass finished in the petite final with a time of 7:24.2. To qualify for the petite finals, the Minutewomen placed third in their heat on Friday with a time of 7:24.6 behind Drexel (7:17.8) and Wisconsin (7:20.6). The varsity eight consisted of rowers Andrea Morand, Julia Richter, Airlina Burrill, Amanda Doolin, Alexandra DiMatteo, Erin Kelly, Terry O'Brien, Samantha Smith, and Molly Morgan (coxswain).
The second varsity eight placed fifth overall with a time of 7:31.8, finishing behind Rhode Island, Buffalo, Rutgers, and Wisconsin. They qualified by placing second in their heat on Friday with a time of 7:32.3, crossing the finish line behind Wisconsin (7:29.9). Following the Minutewomen were Villanova, Duquesne, and Delaware. The second varsity eight consisted of Liz Euiler, Kelsey Schachter, Jennifer Coyne, Haley Fitzgerald, Meredith Kearney, Kelly Barta, Rachel Spielberg, Chelsea Wakeham, and Carly Payne (coxswain).
The varsity quad won, finishing 39.7 seconds ahead of Villanova (8:40.8). Julia Richter, Airlina Burrill, Teresa O'Brien, Samantha Smith completed the course in 8:01.1.
The novice eight finished fourth overall. Old Dominion won the event with a time of 7:51.5, followed by Buffalo, Tulsa, and UMass (8:12.4). The Minutewomen qualified for the grand final by placing second on Friday behind Old Dominion.
