WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The UMass baseball team used a three-run fifth inning to lift the squad to a 6-4 victory over Hartford at Hartford Baseball Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Minutemen's second straight win moves their record to 6-9 on the year, while the Hawks drop to 1-12.

UMass began the scoring with a two-out RBI single by junior Brian Baudinet in the first inning. That brought home sophomore Matt Gedman who walked earlier in the frame.

Then in the fourth, the Minutemen used a pair of infield hits to help plate its second run of the day. Sophomore Peter Copa led off with an infield single, moved to second on an error, went to third on a bunt single by Kyle Multner and scored on a double play ball.

UMass followed up by adding three more in the fifth to build a 5-0 lead. Back-to-back one-out doubles by Baudinet and junior Mike Donato resulted in the team's third run. With two away, another two-bagger by Copa plated Donato, while Copa came around on a single to right by Multner.

The Hawks took two of the runs back in their next turn at-bat. Mike Amendola was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in Drew Sgro, while the next batter, Andy Drexel walked to send in Cody Beahm.

The Minutemen scored their sixth and final run with one out in the sixth when senior Adam Tempesta rocketed a pitch over the left field fence for his third homer of the season, a new career high.

Hartford managed two more runs on the afternoon. In the seventh, Drexel knocked in Ben Sobocinski with a double to center. In the eighth, Kudematsch led off with a walk and scored on a double-play ball bring the Hawks within 6-4.

That would be all, however, as junior Mike Gedman pitched a hitless ninth and picked up one strikeout, logging his third save of the season. Redshirt senior Jim Cassidy pitched 0.2 innings in relief of starter Garrett Butt to earn the win (1-0) in his first outing on the mound since 2007. Butt threw 4.2 innings and allowed two runs on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

Bob Rogers took the loss (0-1) for the Hawks. He gave up five runs, four earned, off nine hits with three walks and one strikeout in 4.2 innings of work.

Four Minutemen tallied multiple hits in the contest, led by Multner's 3-for-4 outing, which included one of the team's four doubles on the day. Donato was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, Copa hit 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored and Baudinet finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and scored once.

Drexel batted 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI to pace Hartford. Sgro went 2-for-3 and Sobocinski was 2-for-5.

Next up for UMass will be a trip to the Bronx, N.Y., this weekend, Mar. 27-29, to face Fordham in a three-game Atlantic 10 series. Friday's contest is slated for 3 p.m.
