CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Benn Ferriero's power play goal 2:25 into the first period was enough to lift No. 12 Boston College past UMass Hockey 2-0 Friday night at Conte Forum. Brock Bradford also scored for the Eagles (12-9-4, 8-7-4 HEA). Paul Dainton got the start in goal for the Minutemen (11-13-3, 6-9-3 HEA), making 22 saves while John Muse made 21 saves in goal for Boston College. Massachusetts will host UMass-Lowell tomorrow night at the Mullins Center. Gametime is scheduled for 7 PM.
The Eagles outshot the Minutemen 24-21 for the game, and were 1-for-5 on the power play. UMass went 0-for-3 on the man-advantage. The Minutemen held the edge in the faceoff department, winning 32-of-58 draws.
Boston College came out hard in the opening minutes of the first period, drawing an early penalty and capitalizing on its power play. Just 2:15 into the frame, Ferriero notched his fifth goal of the season off a pass from Barry Almeida. Almeida took a pass from Cam Atkinson and skated down the right side of the ice. Almeida patiently held the puck before throwing a backhand pass to Ferriero who one-timed the puck over Dainton's glove for the score.
The Minutemen began to throw some pucks on Muse as the period wore on, but the Eagle defense did a good job in keeping the UMass forwards to the sides of the rink and limiting the Minutemen to four shots on goal.
Statistically, the Minutemen dominated the second period, outshooting Boston College 15-5 and winning 16-of-20 faceoffs. UMass went on the man-advantage three straight times, but the power play unit could not solve Muse. The Minutemen moved the puck around well, but the Eagles prevented the puck from getting into the slot.
The Eagles turned the tables on the Minutemen during the third period, outshooting UMass 11-2 and getting three power play chances of their own. Dainton and the UMass penalty-killing unit were able to block several shots and keep the puck out of harm's way.
When UMass was awarded a power play with 1:26 remaining in regulation, the Minutemen pulled Dainton in an effort to net the tying goal. But Bradford knocked down a loose puck and fired it down the ice and into the empty net.
