Women's Soccer Drops 4-0 Decision To Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The UMass women's soccer team closed out a stretch of three straight road games as the squad dropped a 4-0 decision at Charlotte on Sunday afternoon. Following the setback, the Minutewomen are now 3-6-2 overall and 2-2-0 in Atlantic 10 matches, while the 49ers improve to 10-2-0 and a perfect 4-0-0 in the A-10 following their sixth straight win.

Charlotte's first two tallies came less than five minutes apart in the opening half. Hailey Beam gave the 49ers a 1-0 lead at 17:37 with her seventh of the season as she knocked in a cross from Oni Bernard at the near post. Sam Huecker earned an assist on the play, as well.

The next tally, at 21:57, came from Danielle Mayeaux who redirected a shot by Whitney Bryant.

Kirby Stenard added the 49ers' third goal of the half in the 29th minute as she headed in a cross from Whitney Weinraub.

Later, in the 67th minute, India Winford took a long cross from Bernard and deflected the ball past UMass netminder Emily Cota to complete the scoring.

Despite trailing in shots, 24-8, the Minutewomen were accurate with their attempts, including two on net by redshirt junior Sydney Stoll. Lauren Brown totaled five saves for Charlotte, while Cota registered a season-high 12 saves for the Minutewomen.

The 49ers finished with a 7-2 edge in corner kicks and fouls were 14-4 against the 49ers.

UMass will return to action on Friday, Oct. 9, when the team will play host to La Salle on Rudd Field at 4 p.m.
