AMHERST, Mass - In a record breaking day at Joseph Rogers Pool, the Minutemen improved to 5-1 in dual meets with a 188-95 win over Colgate while the Minutewomen fall to 4-3 in dual meets this season as they came up just short in a 171-127 loss against the Red Raiders. Pool records we broken by Colgate's Erica Derlath and Ashley Bottger in the 1650 free (17:13.32) and 100 free (51.96) as well as by UMass' Karen Upperco in the three-meter dive during a very eventful senior day.
Senior diver Karen Upperco (Titusville, N.J.) left her mark in her final competition at Joseph Rogers Pool as she broke her own pool record in the three-meter dive with a new score of 297.45. Upperco made it two first-place finishes on the day, four on the weekend, with a score of 261.23 in the one-meter dive as well. Senior Sarah Horstmann (Hockessin, Del.) finished second in both dives while freshman Hannah Swift (Newark, Del.) placed third in both events.
Christa Narus (Stony Brook, N.Y.) also helped pace the Minutewomen as she was the only individual first-place finisher against a tough Red Raiders team. Narus finished first in the 200 IM (2:11.95) while she also added a third-place finish in the 200 back (2:16.86).
Freshman Chelsea Downing (Falmouth, Mass.) added two second-place finishes for the Minutewomen as she finished the 1650 free in 17:46.58, and the 200 IM in 2:13.67. Junior Elizabeth Walsh (Marshfield, Mass.) notched a second-place finish in the 200 free (1:56.10) and a third-place finish in the 100 free (53.81) while sophomore Jennifer Corriveau (Concord, N.H.) added third-place finishes in the 100 back (59.90) and the 50 free (24.69).
Junior Mike Berthaume (Hampden, Mass.) and sophomore Brian Schmidt (Falmouth, Mass.) were the top performers for the Minutemen against Colgate, notching three first-place finishes and one second-place finish combined. Berthaume finished first in both the 100 back (53.07) and the 100 fly (50.96) while Schmidt claimed victory in the 100 breast (1:00.01) and earned a second-place finish in the 200 breast (2:17.90).
Senior captain Nate Bromage (Three Rivers, Mass.), junior Juan Moliere (San Juan, Puerto Rico), freshman Joey Sbordon (Franklin, Mass.), and junior Tristan Partridge (Lake Forest, Ill.) were also top finishers for the Minutemen as they finished first in the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, and 200 fly respectively.
Freshman Jason Cook (Amherst, Mass.) continued to dominate the diving board as he finished first in both the one-meter and three-meter dives. Cook was followed by sophomore John Clark (Westport, Conn.) in second, junior Byron Johnson (Taunton, Mass.) in third, and sophomore Zach Lichter (Weston, Mass.) in fourth in each diving event.
Both teams will return to the pool Saturday, Jan. 31, to take on Fordham in the Bronx. The meet will begin at 1 p.m..
