AMHERST, Mass. - UMass women's soccer sophomore Therese Smith (Holyoke, Mass.) has been named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week for her two-goal effort at Albany last Wednesday. Her second and third career goals were all that the Minutewomen (3-2-2) needed in a 2-1 win over the Great Danes. This marks the third-consecutive week that a Minutewoman soccer player has been recognized with a weekly award; Vanessa Patry was named A-10 Co-Player of the Week two weeks ago before being named UMass/Dinn. Bros Athlete of the Week last week.
Smith scored the game's first goal in the first half before scoring the eventual game-winner to break a 1-1 tie in the second. The goals extended her mini point streak to a career-high two games. Smith then played all 90 minutes in Sunday's narrow 1-0 defeat to Providence while picking up one of the team's four shots on goal.
The Minutewomen open conference play on Friday when they host St. Bonaventure at 12 p.m. That game marks the first of a triple-header of soccer action followed by two men's games as part of the UMass Classic. The Minutemen then host the Hartford Hawks at 2:30 p.m. and Vermont plays Rhode Island at 4:30.
